In 1973 I was privileged enough to attend the farewell concert of Ziggy Stardust at The Hammersmith Odeon. It was a life turning experience.

Before that, I was just a hippy behaving very much like any youngster those days, always reacting and being a general nuisance. After the concert, I kept behaving more or less the same but something in me had changed. What I saw that night was art, art in the scenery, art in the costumes that the public and the singer wore and of course art in the music and in the lyrics. Art everywhere.

From these day onward, I realized that life could be art and that I wanted to be an artist.

It took a while, but it also stopped the hippy nonsense and heavens forbid, I cut my hair.

En 1973, yo era un hippy insufrible como cualquier otro adolescente de esa época, me la pasaba todo el día escuchando música y reventando, un buen día me tocó la suerte de asistir al concierto de despedida de Ziggy Stardust en el Hammersmith Odeon, fue una experiencia que transformó mi vida,

Esa noche las estrellas se veían diferente, la gente disfrazada de extraterrestre, el cantante también, el escenario alucinante, la música sencilla y la letra tenía un nuevo significado que es difícil que la gente lo entienda ahora, basta decir que el rock and roll estaba en decadencia, había una frase que se empezaba a usar: boring old hippy, (viejo hippy aburrido).

Al salir del concierto algo había cambiado, bowie lo trastocaba todo, el rock and roll lo transformó en arte.

En poco tiempo cambié el estilo de ropa, horror de horrores me corté el pelo ante la burla de mis amigos y me fui a inscribir a la Escuela de Arte de Cambridge ante la preocupación de mis padres que siempre soñaron en tener un hijo científico.

Gracias David, supongo que nos veremos en el infierno pues ni tu ni yo fuimos creyentes.
